Gwaenynog Environmental Policy
Wildlife
- Watching wildlife is something we enjoy and therefore was going to be included in our plans for our move to the country. So we do quite a few things to enhance the wildlife in our garden – feeding the birds is a pleasure, as well as necessary for them, especially during winter, but also all year.
- We will try and avoid using any chemicals in the garden, and so far we have been successful.
- There are some logs piled around which are very attractive to the wildlife – but have to admit that most spare or excess wood is used by us in the fires in the house – so recycling!

Recycling
- We recycle as much as possible: Powys collect cardboard, plastic bottles, newspaper, magazines (although we try and leave those in the lounge for a while, for other guests to read!) and drink and food cans. Plus we recycle all food waste, including any excess from our cooking – as we have a compost bin. Additionally, we collect all our excess cooking fats and mix with birdseed, so they benefit from our waste.
Resources
- There is a towel and bed linen policy, as per the notice in all bathrooms. Automatically we change these every guest (of course!) unless you ask for a more frequent change. Any towels placed in the shower will get changed for fresh ones.
- We use environmentally friendly cleaning and laundry products, especially due to having a septic tank, including using recycled toilet paper - although not yet for napkins or tissues.
- We have our own water supply, so we would appreciate your consideration in usage – please don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth, for example. Drinking water is supplied in glass bottles in the fridge on the landing.
- Please turn off lights when not in use. We are replacing bulbs with low energy ones as and when they need replacing.
- We try and shop locally as much as possible, especially our local butcher & greengrocer!
Waste
- As we have a septic tank, which we've nicknamed Septic Sid, we need to ask everyone to be considerate over what they put down the toilet – poor Sid cannot cope with more than toilet paper! So, no sanitary towels, nappies, teabags, dental floss or facial wipes. As someone once said - "Nothing to get flushed down the toilet, except toilet paper!"
