The snow of Spring 2013…
Well, what a surprising month March 2013 turned out to be – especially when you compare to 2012. We put our garden furniture outside on the patio in March 2012, but this year… well; suffice to say the garden furniture wasn’t moving out of storage in the barn!
March started off comparatively cool, but wet, and then became a bit warmer even though still a bit rainy, and after that we had about a week of really bright, although chilly weather. Then the chill became much, much colder and snowed… a lot of snow; the most seen in this area for over 30 years, apparently. We had about 18” (excluding the drifts) on our yard and patio area, plus some parts of our fields – some of our bushes in the garden collapsed under the weight! There were even branches which got broken, but most dramatic was the tree which snapped in half (see picture below) in the woods.
- There are bushes under neath
- More like the Alps
- Our poor little staddlestone
- Our very helpful neighbour
- Front garden
- Broken tree…!
- Rear of Gwaenynog
- Some small signs of spring..
There were guests booked with us during that time – all postponed till a later date, wisely as it happened. We didn’t even attempt to go anywhere until our neighbour helped us by scraping about 6-8” off our drive and yard with his digger and bucket – some of those piles are still with us. Fortunately we didn’t lose power at all, so we were luckier than a lot of people who were affected, even locally. Sadly we had to cancel a camper who was to visit us, as not only was the field covered with snow (it still is to some extent ) but due to the icy conditions, we had to turn the water supply off to the toilet block…
The reason I recall the bright days was because my father was visiting us, and we went out every day for his first week with us – I was either shopping or attending appointments, so whilst we were out we would have lunch at various locations. A couple of places will go onto our eating out list, because they were so good – and with my 91 year-old Dad’s stamp of approval! So, even when I’m out and socialising, I am also working! And due to the snow, my brother couldn’t come and visit – the plan was for him to take my Dad back home after his stay; there’ll always be another time.
Fortunately we’re blessed with great neighbours and once the drive had most of its snow removed, and with our 4×4, we were able to return my Dad home – in time for him to pack for his next cruise… We hope the weather is much warmer for him in the Mediterranean – all he said he was wishing for was no more “white stuff”!!
I couldn’t agree more! So, until the next time…
