Challenging Wales

Someone told us before we moved to Wales that we’d have to take the weather into account – and we’ve certainly been tested (see previous blogs!). We Brits are known for our obsession with the weather, but even the locals were surprised with the violence of the wind in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Fortunately we have not seen the flooding like other parts of the country – maybe because we get more rain than most anyway, so we are better prepared.

Areas west of us had gusts of over 100 miles per hour, and I struggled to get to the barn for more wood for the fire; the closest I can describe is when I was on a ferry crossing the channel – you may know that feeling, when you cannot breathe and the wind is so strong you can lean into it without falling over… well, that was what it was like. Even the dogs decided to head back indoors! We had a few tree casualties, but the main impact was the branch on the drive (pictured right).

Anyway, now that has moved on and we’re ready for spring here – the snowdrops have been out for a while and the daffs are starting to poke their heads up. There are even lambs in nearby fields, although not on Gwaenynog yet. It’s a sure sign that spring is coming…
